Rev. Cyril A. Stevens – Sermon 0039A recorded on April 8, 1979 teaching from Luke 19:40 – If These Should Hold Their Peace, the Stones Would Immediately Cry Out.
Pastor Cyril A. Stevens examines the events of Passion Week by identifying a tripartite sequence in which Jesus reveals His divine authority. Rather than viewing the entry into Jerusalem as a single event, Stevens argues that Luke’s Gospel condenses three distinct days that showcase Jesus first as King, then as Priest, and finally as Prophet. On the first day, Jesus displays royal majesty by commanding a wild colt with gentle hands; on the second, He acts with priestly zeal to purge the temple of commercial desecration; and on the third, He serves as a truth-telling prophet who predicts the coming judgment of the city. Ultimately, Stevens challenges his listeners to move beyond historical observation and allow Jesus to perform these transformative roles within their own lives today.
